The New Geomancy

Geomancy is a catch-all term covering every kind of earth divining and site assessment, from Feng Shui to stone circle construction, from ritual energy clearing to reading electromagnetic frequencies in sick buildings. It’s a term I use to describe what I do professionally, which can be briefly described as assessing sites by both ancient and modern methods, on both the physical and the energy levels, using instruments of various kinds, in order to help people develop a greater sense of harmony with their surroundings. This process also usually includes ‘energy adjustments’ of various kinds, from the conventional to the very weird and subtle!

In this short article, I’ll try to give an idea of this art and science from the more ‘energetic’ point of view,  and how it is becoming even more necessary in these stressed times than ever before. I hope there are some techniques you can pick up and use yourself to help clear your own spaces.

‘Western Feng Shui’

Many people are now aware of the term Feng Shui, an art used by the Chinese for thousands of years to help people live in harmony with their surroundings. Feng Shui has a grand tradition, deeply steeped in the same philosophy which has given us acupuncture, and is based on a view of the universe as made up of energies. Modern science, especially physics, has come to a similar view. The original Feng Shui practitioners had a deep understanding of the energies that course through the landscape, and knew how to read them and use them.

In its enthusiastic adoption by the west in recent years, however, Feng Shui has often been pressed into service as a form of interior decoration, and there has been a tendency to reduce it to a series of ‘symptomatic treatments’ for spaces - put a mirror here, a fishpond there, and hey presto! You’ll get lucky! This is similar to the use of acupuncture for treating just the symptom, neglecting the understanding and reading of the much more powerful energies that underlie the system.

A geomancer must be able to ‘read’ the energies that are constantly swirling around us, and this is an art that has fallen into decline in the last 200 years in the west as we have plunged into our love affair with rationalism. We are bathed in an ocean of energies, on many levels of subtlety, and it is possible to detect the most significant energy currents using that age-old and very advanced instrument, the human bodymind. This method of geomancy is still crucial to real energy detection, and often involves some form of dowsing to aid tuning in. We also use the latest meters to detect and measure magnetic, electrical and microwave (cellphones, towers, TV and radio transmitters, etc.) fields

Depending on the results of the energy assessment of a site, a number of (optional) remedies may be suggested:

a. re-siting of furniture or even fixed structures

b. clearing of persistent noxious energies (‘space clearing’) and re-routing of energy lines

c.  possible installation of ioniser(s) to purify and energise the air

d. installation of ‘living water’ system for detoxification and protection of inhabitants
