A handbook of Dowsing by Tim Strachan
Dowsing has a long, illustrious and checkered history. Because it accesses the realm of intuition, however, it is often sneered at in these rational times. But in fact, most people are using their 'dowsing response' constantly - they just call it something else, like 'a hunch', a 'gut feeling', a 'sixth sense', 'first impression' and so on. A dowsing response is simply a kind of self-registering biofeedback.
Dowsers' brain waves
It is interesting to note that experiments done with the brain waves of dowsers show up some surprising results. It was established that meditators' brain waves clustered in the lower range, ordinary attention clustered in the middle to upper range, while the practised dowser had brain waves evenly covering pretty much the entire range! This suggests that a dowser's perceptions (when dowsing at least) are operating over a wide band, that such a person is habitually super-attentive, though not just at a mental level. It's rather like a singer with a range of a few octaves rather than just one or two.
Surveys have shown that 35% of people can naturally dowse for water. With the right preparation and exercises, everybody can dowse. It's just built-in to your sensory apparatus, particularly in the brow, the pituitary gland and the adrenal glands, in the form of millions of microscopic magnetite crystals within the cells in those areas. Certain animals have similar equipment, and can navigate unerringly using earth energy currents, or respond accurately to the energies of places. The mechanism used is possibly very low intensity coherent electromagnetic fields moving through the 'energy body', which is a subtle body all living beings have closely allied to the level of acupuncture meridians (or part of what some call the etheric body).
The Energy Body takes in a huge amount of information continuously on many levels, environmental and otherwise. Then the mind (which has been called the static that overlays the energy body), depending on its state of stillness, either allows through some of those perceptions or filters them out.
When the mind allows these perceptions through (by being quiet) we can more easily access our 'dowsing response'. It means that we can access a deeper and different knowledge than the usually superficial rational mental knowledge, valuable though this is in its place. This is what allows us to tune in to other people's energy fields, as well as the fields of places - we might get a sense of well-being in a positive place, and perhaps an uneasy feeling in a place affected by geopathic stress.
In fact, your energy body, while it is yours and has a degree of differentiation from the world around it, is yet also continuous with the energy bodies of other people, animals, plants and the earth itself. This potentially allows you the ability to connect to remote people and places, depending on a number of factors, such as the clarity of your energy body, the amount of practice you’ve done on this level, your ability to quiet the mind, and so on.
Instruments or not?
Dowsing instruments are used simply to amplify certain signals that occur in our energy bodies and the resultant imperceptible signals in our physical bodies. L-rods and pendulums are the most common of these tools, but there are thousands of different tools that have been devised over the centuries. Indeed you can dowse with practically anything.
Other methods of biofeedback
These instruments can be gradually phased out as you develop a sensitivity for the changes in your own body as a result of different energy configurations. For example, among my responses are a rising feeling for 'yes', a sinking feeling for 'no', slight nausea in the belly on noxious sites, spirallic sensations in various places, and so on. I know someone who gets an itch on his cheek when something feels right.
Sticky fingers
Another popular method of accessing the knowledge of your energy body is the 'sticky fingers' method. Simply rub thumb and finger lightly against each other - most people get a 'yes' as a smooth feeling in the rubbing, while a 'no' occurs when the two fingers seem to stick a little, as if friction were suddenly occurring.
Muscle-testing
Muscle-testing, or kinesiology, is no more than accessing the energy body of a person and finding a dowsing response of a kind. The tester tests a muscle by pushing down on it against the resistance of the client. When the muscle tests weak, this suggests a 'no' - i.e., the substance or the thought being held at the time has a weakening effect on the client. The opposite holds for the strong response.
And there are other methods. For the moment we'll stick to the L-rods, but please develop any or all of the methods suggested here, and find your best entry into your own wisdom.
Dowsing Techniques
Here are some hints for dowsing (and any other time, for that matter!):
1. Exercises to develop your sensitivity
Do these on a regular basis and whenever you're about to have a dowsing session.
Right hand rubs coccyx, with Left hand on hara (just below navel) Reverse the hands described above Rub the two Kidney 27 acupuncture points to be found in the corner formed by the sternum and the collarbone With left hand on hara, rub upper and lower lips simultaneously with two fingers Do again with hands reversed Rub your brow to activate the magnetite crystals there Activate the pituitary centre by pushing the tongue back to the soft palate, and/or pressing the centre of the pads of the big toes With both hands, rub the area of the kidneys Rub the belly/hara in a circular motion in the direction of the large intestine Shake hands and arms vigorously for a short while.
2. Clarity and precision
Be as clear as possible in your mind/imagination about what the dowsing is aiming for. Mental imagery is powerful here, and the more precise the better. So if you're looking for water, imagine a stream of a certain size; if you're looking for geomagnetic lines, imagine the lines of force of the earth. Involve as many subtle senses as possible, including smell, kinaesthetics, hearing and so on, without getting too overwrought or goal-oriented about it.
3. No neurological 'cross-overs'
Many people are somewhat 'electrically switched', slightly disorganised at a neurological level, due to the many pressures in our present environment. However, you can test this yourself by having someone muscle-test you while you touch the top of your head, first with palm downwards, then with palm upwards. If you test strong for the first test, weak for the second, you're probably not switched. Otherwise, you may be. The best solution to this is to have a full acupressure session with muscle-testing with a competent practitioner to determine the level of switching.
